I love songs! In other words: Pieces of music, which are telling a story and which have a beginning and an ending – as for me without vocals as well. That something like this is happening in the field of electronic music, too, a surprising discovery has shown to me a few months ago again.

I stumbled upon the songs by a young musician from Dresden who releases under the name IOKA. Initially his works are influenced by Drum & Bass, Dubstep and Downtempo. Beyond that he juggles many different styles of electronic music, without losing an exhilarant originality. The releases so far impress by their polished compositions and the high degree of quality relating to the production.

IOKA‘s songs really are telling stories. Like 2 too many, which is a reminiscence to Sergio Leone‘s classic Once Upon a Time in the West and Charles Bronson‘s first grand entrance in that movie. Great, how film samples, beats and sounds retell this hundred-year scene.

Besides the preference for samples you can find the enthusiasm for far eastern sounds and rhythms in some of IOKA‘s tracks. Like in Jasmin Wuyuann №8, which is featuring the guest singer Yazzmina.

My actual favorites are the two older songs Black Orange and Black Fire. The first reminds me of Plaid‘s 99er album Rest Proof Clockwork, the second for me has got the same energy as Prodigy‘s Firestarter.

If you like to explore IOKA‘s cosmos, just visit his Soundcloud-profile. Here you can find about 20 tracks, which all thrill in their own special way. In addition to that I can advice his first official EP called This Is IOKA he has released at the Italian label Congarecords a few weeks ago. The digital release contains three songs and is available both as mp3 and wav.

For me IOKA is a great discovery. And at this point I only can seriously invite everyone to follow the links below.

Liebe Grüße
Sebastian
